Bethania Welsh Independent chapel, Manod Road, Blaenau Ffestiniog, 2001
An anonymous actor visiting Wales described the interiors: 'one is aware of the truly dramatic atmosphere of so many Welsh chapels, which like the Elizabethan theatre style, have an intimacy which brings together actor and audience, or pastor and flock, closely locked in the business of drama or worship - or both'. The preaching of God's word was paramount in nonconformist services and the pulpit rather than the altar was therefore the focal point, the layout of ground floor and gallery pews allowing an optimum view for congregation and minister alike. The platform pulpit with its sweeping steps to either side provided the perfect stage for the minister's orations; he was framed by the pulpit arch, and confronted by the gallery clock ticking away the minutes of each carefully prepared act.
