Description

Drawing by Falcon Hildred
Cider house, Cwm Farm, Llangattock Lingoed, Monmouthshire, 2007
Ink and watercolour drawing on paper.
Falcon recorded this building during a visit by the Welsh Mills Society. The lower view is though looking through the front wall. Cider mill components are often retained as garden features, but this one is still complete after more than 250 years. The purpose-built cider house was completed in 1754 by William Watkins, whose initials are recorded on the date-stone above the door. The cider press has a screw carved from a single piece of wood and there is an apple loft with a stone-lined chute down which apples were fed to the mill.
