Description

Mabel Elsie was born c.1902 and went to work at Pembrey Munitions Factory at the age of 14 after her father's death in 1916. She was reported to the authorities for being under the age of 16 and as a result was sent to work in the factories canteen.

Mabel Elsie's mother was Eliza Davies OBE (nee Belton) who was originally from Norfolk. She was in service and originally moved to the area of Builth Wells. She met her husband Huw Davies who worked ar Penllegaer Estate, and they lived together in Pentre Garw, Fforest Fach, Swansea. Huw stayed at home during the First World War due to the nature of his work. Sadly he was found dead in the woods at Penllegaer Estate in 1916, aged only 39. During the war, Eliza worked at the Munitions Factory in Pembrey and became supervisor. Having lost her father, Mabel Elsie also went to work at the Munitions Factory.

Eliza Davies was awarded an OBE for the brave act of preventing an explosion from happening at Pembrey Munitions Factory.
