Description

A photograph of Police Constable Sidney Whomes of the Neath Borough Police. Carrying his personal issue gas mask, the photo was taken during the Second World war....probably about 1941.

After WWII, the Home Office carried out a review of many of the smaller police forces within the UK. Many were said to been inefficient. As a direct result of the review, in 1947, Neath Borough Police (along with many others) ended its long history and ceased to exist..

It was amalgamated into the Glamorgan County force, the old Borough police force forming a new 'N' Division within Glamorgan.

Sid, along with other Borough police officers was automatically transferred into the Glamorgan Constabulary. One of several photos given to me by Sid, prior to his death.
