Description

A photo showing Isaac Rees, pit manager from 1918-1923 (on the left, with the moustache!) with some miners below ground. Two shafts were sunk between 1909 and 1914.
The 'Margaret' shaft- the main downcast ventilation pit, was sunk to a depth of 2384feet, 9inches and measured 24 feet in diameter.
The second shaft, 'Mildred', the upcast ventilation pit was smaller, but nonetheless reached a depth of 2315 feet, 9 inches and was 20 feet in width. 'Mildred' is shown in this photograph, which also appears in John Cornwells book 'Rhondda Cynon Taff Collieries', published by Landmark Publishing in 2008), but this is a scan from a photograph given to Isaac Rees.
