Description

One of the Cwm colliery tunnels. I believe Isaac Rees, pit manager from 1918 to 1923, is the gentleman standing on the timbers to the left of the picture. Conifers imported from their native Scandinavia which passed through Cardiff docks were used for the wooden framework, hence they were referred to as 'Norways'. This is also the reason for the Norwegian Church in Cardiff. Again, this photograph appears in the book 'Rhondda Cynon Taff Collieries' but is not acknowledged . This scan, however, is from a photograph given to Isaac Rees.
