Transcript of Eddie Probert's WW1 diary which give an impression of the preliminary events before he left for France. There are question marks where the words have been difficult to decipher, and the spellings have been left as they were. "I left Blaina on the morning of the 13th of May 1918 for Newport at 3.0 clock and arrived at Brecon at half past five and it was raining. We went to bed at quarter to ten and lights out at ten thirty. We had to be in Barracks at nine thirty and we are to get up at 5 oclock the drill ? was to be at 5.30 we had breakfast at 7 oclock ? I was the lucky one to ? until 9.30 when we were turned out and then went to bed. We rose up next morning at 5.30 and dressed for Breakfast at 7 oclock. We lined up at 9.30 for chapel but I was picked to go the officer's mess and prepare for dinner and I finished after till dinner at 1.oclock and after we are free until 9.30 when lights are out. In the morning we got up at 5.30 and had food at 6 and got ready for Rhyl at 7 oclock. We started at 7.15 and was travelling until 6pm to Kinmil Park outside Rhyl and saw plenty of ? On the 6th May 1918. We got up at 6 of clock parate to the doctor for to look at teeth and had 7? numerals. After lunch we went to be inochulated and then had dinner and at 6 oclock went for a walk round the Huts until 9.30 when we went to bed to rest. We had 48 hours leave for to get better . So in the evening we went ? We had our Rifles on the 21 May 1918 and on the 22 we did some marching about until 12/30 when we finished for the day. The next day it was raining so we stopped on the ? and drilled until 3 oclock when we had an inspection of kit after that we finished for the day. On the 27 May we had the first ? and have to have it for a ? I was victinated on Thursday the 29 May 1918 and had to have 5 teeth out and on the following Monday I had 4 days excused duty because of my arm bad I did not leave the hut for the four days and after I had another 4 days and 2 more after I started to drill of Friday 14 June I went to ? attending afternoon and chapel on Sunday morning. Work as usual on Monday + etc half holiday on Wend. Left Herne Bay Kent on the 20/9/18. Landed in France 22/Sept 18. Joined the KLSI ( King's Shropshire Light Infantry ) on 29/9/18 First night in Trenches on 2/10/18. Crossed into Belgium 20 Oct 18". There were no further entries.
