Description
Crest designed and drawn for the Welsh Section of the Society of Dairy Technology by P. F. Carter.
Crest explanation:
The crest has been designed and executed by one who has a taken a keen interest in activities of the Welsh section of the Society of Dairy Technology since its foundation. The Society caters for the interests of a wide section of the public who are concerned with the production, and distribution of milk and milk products. There are well over one hundred members attached to the Welsh section and since its establishment, meetings have been held at regular intervals in different parts of the Principality.
The central figure in the crest is the Dragon, on which are interwoven the letters S. T. D. W. - representing the linkage of Wales with the present Society. Superimposed over this are three other symbols commonly associated with Wales, namely the Prince of Wales' feathers, the harp and the lady at a spinning wheel dressed in the traditional Welsh costume.
Much emphasis has been laid on the part education has played in the development of the dairy industry. There are included, the crests of the four constituent colleges of the University of Wales - Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff and Swansea; the University Dairy building at Aberystwyth as well as the contribution of agricultural institutes have not been overlooked.
The progress which the commercial side of the industry has made, is vividly portrayed in the contrast shown between a creamery of fifty years ago and one of the modern type. This is amplified in the display of modern equipment for the production of high grade milk, and of up to date facilities for the testing of manufacture of milk and its products.
Bordering each side of the crest are the coats of arms or other emblems representative of each of the Welsh counties, as well as some Welsh boroughs, also including the National Library. Thus is shown the widespread nature of the section's activities and interests. In the bottom right hand corner is a memento of a visit which section members made to southern Ireland in the summer of 1945. It serves as a reminder of the section's social as well as educational contributions and the goodwill which prevails among a group of people with common interests.
Finally, it is most appropriate that the cow - the foster mother of the human race - should have a place in the crest. She provides the substance which not only makes possible the dairy industry, but also upon which the sustenance of the human race very largely depends.
John Lewis. M. Sc. Aberystwyth. May 1949
