Description

A helmet of the former Cardiff City Police. All black fittings which was for wear during the hours of darkness. Queens Crown badge....(post 1953).

Cardiff City Police ceased to exist in 1969, when it became part of the newly formed South Wales Constabulary.

The policeman's uniform metalwork on his helmet, buttons, badges etc meant that he was less conspicuous during the hours of darkness.

That way, whilst on his beat he was able to quietly watch what was going on around him, but from a darkened doorway or corner, with little or no light reflection from his uniform.

This one has the officers details on the inside, written in ink on the headband.....279 'B'. B Division would have been the Canton area of Cardiff.
