Description

Staff at Tirmorfa Infants School c.1965. The wall mural in the background depicting staff and pupils of the school, now Ysgol Gynradd Rhos Afan, is the work of Port Talbot born artist, Andrew Vicari, whose works may be found in major museums and art galleries. In the early 1960s, two local teachers, Mr. Tom Harrison and Mr. Pat O'Neil, attended evening classes under the tuition of Mr. Andrew Vicari, their task being to develop/express their talent by depicting well known nursery rhymes as wall paintings at Tirmorfa Infants School. Delighted with their work, Mr Vicari offered to paint a wall mural for the school entitled,ヤWar and Peaceヤ. The headteacher, Miss Mair Jones, unhappy with the title, came to an agreement that the mural should depict staff and pupils at the school. No fee was charged, the cost of materials defrayed by holding concerts, jumble sales and other such events.
