Press Release: "£116 million - The Gift that keeps on coming", Cardiff, 29 May 2009

This press release reports on volunteers having been invited to a celebratory dinner at Cardiff Castle on the 3rd of June 2009. According to a research, undertaken by the UK Government Citizenship survey, the time the volunteers gave in 2008 amounted to £116 million. It is estimated that over 100,000 people had contributed towards this amount and the dinner was to show gratitude for their hard-earned efforts. A vast cross section of the volunteering community was represented, a few of them included: Disability organisations, sporting groups, and the homeless.

Voluntary Community Service (VCS) was established in Cardiff in October 1964 with main aim, as stated in its constitution, to promote any charitable purposes, advancement of education, relief of poverty, distress and sickness in the City of Cardiff. Originally VCS co-ordinated a team of volunteers involved in activities such as helping elderly people with gardening and decorating, running summer ‘work camps’ for children and young people. Its mission today is to enable people who are most disadvantaged to engage with rewarding volunteering opportunities, facilitating their personal development and employment prospects.
