Description

All over the country churches and chapels used to get together on Whitsun so celebrate Pentecost, the promised coming of the Holy Spirit to the Disciples after Jesus' Ascension. They did this with a walk of witness. Newport was no exception. Children would have new outfits for Whitsun - it was very important to look one's best. After the walk and a tea party it was common to have sports. A great day was had by all, although it must have been a lot of work for some people. In this photograph you can see the Revd. Cyril Summers and his wife, Dorothy, leading the walk, under the Community House banner.
