Description

A fragment of the ribbon cut at the opening of the New King's Dock at Swansea. The inscription reads: 'This Blue Ribbon was cut at the opening of the New King's Dock, Swansea today, November 23rd 1909, by the S.S. Polyphemus.' It is signed John Adams.

By the end of the nineteenth century it was apparent that the existing docks at Swansea were insufficient to deal with the increase in trade, due to the burgeoning industrial activity in South Wales at that time.
The first sod of the King's Dock was cut by King Edward VII in July 1904, and the dock was formally opened in 1909.
