Description

David Lloyd George borrowed this policeman's helmet and whistle from Constable William Thomas in order to escape from the crowd following a public meeting at Birmingham on 18 December 1901. Lloyd George had made a speech against the Boer War when the crowd turned against him, forcing him to make a hasty exit disguised as a policeman.
