Description

This oil portrait of Simon Lloyd, Plas Power, Wrexham, was painted in 1749. The portrait measures 127 x 101.6 cms. An oil portrait of his wife, Sarah Lloyd, was also painted by Thomas Frye. Frye (1710-62) was born near Dublin but moved to London c. 1729 where he established himself as an artist, engraver and miniaturist.

Most of the men in the Lloyd family were named William. Although this painting is of a Simon Lloyd we believe he was also called William, as there are no records existing showing a Simon Lloyd. However records of the correct period exist showing a Sarah Lloyd married to a William Lloyd. Plas Power came into the Fitzhugh Family in 1816 through the marriage of the heiress of the Lloyds to Thomas Fitzhugh. Lieut-Colonel G.E. Fitzhugh (Commanding Officer of the 61st Medium Regiment between 1939 and 1943) subsequently inherited the portraits of Simon and Sarah Lloyd.
