Description

In 1918, the American Humanist Moina Michael read John McCrae's poem. This inspired her to campaign to make the poppy a symbol of remembrance in America. The first 'Poppy Appeal' in the UK in 1921 used fabric poppies made by women and children in devastated areas of France to raise money to support ex-servicemen and the families of those who had died in the war.Canada, New Zealand and Australia also adopted the poppy shortly after the war, making the poppy a world-wide symbol of remembrance. In 1922 the British Legion set up a poppy making factory staffed by disabled ex-servicemen. The poppy continues to be sold worldwide to raise money to support ex-servicemen and women.
