Description

Portrait of Sir George Cornwall Lewis (1806-1863), which was especially commissioned to hang in the dining room at Presteigne Shire Hall.

The inscription on the frame reads as follows:
'The Right Honourable Sir George Cornwall Lewis, of Harpton Court, Baronet, M.P. for the Radnorshire Boroughs and Rector of New Radnor. Having had the distinguished honour of serving the Crown in three Great Offices of State, successively as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Secretary of State for the Home Department and Secretary of State for War, he died while holding the seals of the last named office on the 13th of April 1863 in the 57th year of his age. This portrait painted in the last year of his life is a valued gift to his Native County.'
