Description

Life in India for the British soldier in the 19th century was often extremely boring. The many native servants, oppressive heat, cheap local spirits and much off-duty time made it not surprising that drunkenness became a severe problem. To combat this, the army authorities encouraged the growth of the Army Temperance League and the Soldiers' Total Abstinence Association. Medals were issued by these associations to encourage temperance. These were worn by soldiers in uniform on the left breast.
