Although this view is related to the construction of Barry Dock, it shows the construction of the Western Breakwater at the dock entrance, not No 1 Dock. The stone tipping was commenced at the outer end using a single line of railway on the trestle and in due course the whole temporary timber trestle was replaced by stone. The Eastern breakwater can be glimpsed through the trestle on the left hand side of the photograph.
