Description
The manilla was a bracelet usually made from copper or iron and worn by the people of West Africa on the arm or leg. Manillas were used as currency and they were worn by wives to display their husband's wealth. Copper was known as the 'red gold' of Africa and it was mined and traded across the Sahara by Italian and Arab merchants.
This manilla was recovered from an unknown wreck near Holyhead.
