Description

A beautifully hand painted and hand written 'Illuminated Address' to Mr. James Thomas, Superintendent of the Glamorgan County Constabulary, dated May 1891. At the time of it's making, Superintendent Thomas lived in the Parish of Aberdare.

It measures 20 inches by 25 inches. At the very bottom, it is recorded as 'ILLUMINATED BY D. OWEN & CO. LTD, CARDIFF

Illuminated addresses were once important components of a celebration of achievement. They were generally very ornate and often included elements of the person’s history in the medley of images. Today the art of the illuminated address has all but vanished.

A rare item and recent addition to the Ross Mather Police Memorabilia of Wales Collection.
