Postcard informing members of the Cardiff New Synagogue about the changes to the Simchat Torah Children's Service, Temple of Peace, Cardiff, 1948-1952

Description

This postcard informs the members of the Cardiff New Synagogue of changes to the Simchat Torah Children's Service. It notifies that the service will be held at The Temple of Peace at Cathays Park, Cardiff on the Sunday Evening of 24 October instead of the Monday morning. It was written by Leslie Corne, the Honorary Secretary of the Cardiff New Synagogue at the time. The card is undated and would be between 1948-1952 as the congregation worshipped at the Temple of Peace before moving to a permanent location at Moira Terrace in 1952.

The Cardiff Reform Synagogue was founded in 1948 as the Cardiff New Synagogue. The following year, it became a constituent member of the Movement for Reform Judaism. Born in reaction against the more restrictive traditions of the Orthodox Judaism of Cardiff Hebrew Congregation, such as the prohibition of driving on the Sabbath and the ban on interfaith marriages, the new Synagogue appealed to the immigrants who had fled the war-torn Europe, where the Reform movement was already well-established. The congregation worships in a converted Methodist Chapel on Moira Terrace they acquired in 1952.
