Transcript:

The armed mercantile cruiser Patia, reported by the Admiralty to have been torpedoed last Thursday with the loss of one officer and 15 men, carried a Forfar lad as a member of her crew. This was A.B. Norman Soutar, R.N.R., son of Mr Alexander Soutar, Prior Road, who is home this week on survivor’s leave after his trying experiences.

Seaman Soutar who was on look-out duty at the time the ship was struck saw and reported the approach of the “mouldie,” but there was not time to manoeuvre the vessel clear. He was saved in one of the boats. He has two brothers in the army, and a third is training as a wireless operator.
