Description
The Mynydd Parys penny was first minted in 1787 and lasted until 1817. Halfpennies were also produced. The pennies were originally introduced because of a shortage of pennies when the Royal Mint stopped producing pennies in 1775. 23 years passed before the Mint restarted production of pennies.
Parys Mining Company produced its own pennies using copper from Parys Mountain to pay its workers in this period of shortage. It is believed that the total amount of pennies from Parys Mountain allocated over those 30 years exceeds 10 million.
