Thomas Saunders : I am in the employment
of Daniel Lewis of Abersychan I am a shopman
I left Abersychan about eight o Clock Sunday
Sunday morning and went to Brynmawr
to see Mr Richard Marsden I purchased 3 yds
of plad Stuff 1/6 yd. I spent the day atBryn-
mawr
I dined at Richard Marsden left his
House about 7 o clock and went on my way
to Abersychan I met a number of men
from 40 to 50 they tould me you are bound to
come with us to Zephenia Williams s House
those persons came with me to the door I
went into the Kitchen where there was a
number of persons drinking I believe the[y]
were Chartists I went with Williams s son
to the parlour he gave me 2 Chartist cards
one for Lewis and one for myself I paid 2/6
for each as entrance money and 6 d for the
cards he dated the cards the 6th of July I drank
a glass of Beer I went and joined the party
we went on the way of Beaufort over the Hill
near EbbwVale S/Z/ephania was standing on high
ground he said to me you are here he said
come to me he said what do you think of the

night then I asked him what was his intention
he said we are going to Newport very likely to
Monmouth I thought I better go home and moved
________________this was the Ridge of the Hill
to go my way stop stop said he you must go
with me to take this men on I was much frightened
and I went with them we started it was then
from 10 to 11 o Clock from the Hill then we met
another party we were then a large number we
went on to pont aber Beeg several went to the
publick-house - soon after S [Z] Williams got a
Tram soon after got another put to it on we
went till we came to a publick-house which is
between two roads, there was a great body of men
there S[Z]ephania myself and others where in the
Tram - we stopd at this publick house more than
an hour from there I walk with S[Z] Williams
he was behind I believe to prevent any of the
men
[^] to turn back - there was a young man in a plad
coat
[^] kept the men in order with a middle age man
who had a Mandrel & Tin horn keeping the men in order
I would know both men we came in that

order to Newport we came by the Church untill
we came to a thatch House - here we met men
Carrying a man wounded the men then said
to Williams you are taking us to be killed - he
then tould them go on go on - that time I
left them with others who run d away
I understood Mr Frost to be at the publick house
when we stopd - I saw S[Z] Williams
urging the me/n/ to go on by the thatch house
