Richard Williams of the Navigation Inn at
____________in the parish of Llanhiddell
Crumlin ^ in the County of Monmouth
Inn keeper - states - I keep the Navigation Inn
- There is Chartist Lodge held at my house - the
general night of meeting is^ Monday - I paid
1d. a week - the meetings were not regular, sometimes
once a fortnight - then I paid 2d__ There was a
meeting on the Monday week of the Riots but
I do not recollect that anything particular was
said - On the Wednesday stet
the last Wednesday in October
and Jones the Watchmaker
attended a meeting of the Members of the Lodge
[*] whilst I was at dinner my Wife
came and told me that some men wanted to
see me & that it was something about the Charter
I did not wish to see them and went out to my
farm by the back door - When I came
back some time after about dusk ^my house was full of
people - Zephaniah Williams & Jones
the Watchmaker were with them -
When I found there was a Lodge there I went into
the room where they were - Every one but

the members was ordered out (this was a new
plan) the door was shut, but not locked - After
I got in Zephaniah got up. He asked^ in Welsh if any one
there wished to know the nature of the Charter
- Some of them said they did wish to know - He
then said it was Vote by Ballot universal
suffrage, that every person of 21 years of age &
in his right senses & nothing against his
______________give his voice to choose
Character had a right to ^ a Member of Parlt
as well as the best - He also said that he thought
the Charter would be the Law of the Land sooner
than many expected it - that he thought they
would be able to get it without any bloodshed
- And that he would recommend everyone to provide
Jones afterwards spoke to them in English which I did not understand
Something to defend themselves with ^
__Zephaniah afterwards
^ said he had something to say
_to the Leaders
in secret ^ - I thought Zephaniah wished to say
something to the foreman of the Lodge which He
did not wish me to hear - & I went out I did
not hear anything more -

Williams & Jones left that Evening about 1/2 past
10.- I did not offer them a place to sleep. I do not know

and Robt Morris came to my House, and asked
me for the money that belonged to the Lodge -
I asked how much it was - John James looked
on the Lodge account & cast it up - the amount was
£3. 3. 1. or £3. 2. 1. I don`t recollect which -
I put that amount on the table & ^ Robt Morris
took it up. They did not say what they were going
to do with the money & I had no idea what they
intended to do with it - I was glad to get rid of
it for I thought they had some mischief in
hand from what I had heard the night before -
I heard some talk among the Men on Saturday
night the 2 nd November that a general rise
was to take place the next day, & on Sunday
Morning I left my house & went to my Son's in
the Parish ofPen a darin [*] in Breconshire - I returned
on the Wednesday after -
