Mapson Thomas Smith of Maesglas// Farmer
in the parish of St. Woolos -
^ I know the Prisoner well On the morning of the 4th Nov[embe]r
instant between 10 & 11 o'clock I was
riding on the Turnpike
road ^leading from Cardiff to Newport Between the Waterloo Inn and
Mr. Powell 's Lodge , I met the
Prisoner and 3 or 4 Men with
him- there were straggling parties
of men all along the road to Newport
and before I came to the Waterloo
Gate, some had Guns, most of
them were returning from the direction
of Newport, several without hats-
The Prisoner was walking quickly
he appeared as if he was going
into the Waterloo Inn- where he went a little
before I came up to the Prisoner
he turned his head over his shoulder
away from me as if to avoid me
