The Information of Ebenezer Vaughan Jenkins
of Newport in the County of Monmouth taken on Oath
before us two of her Majestys Justices of the Peace
for the County of Monmouth this 19 day of November
1839
Ebenezer Vaughan Jenkins saith I reside in
Newport - at Mr Williams' Druggist in
Commercial Street - I was in Newport
all day on Sunday the third November
instant - about half past ten o'Clock
on Sunday night I went with Mr Lewis
Edwards to his House in company with
several others in order to protect it
against the Chartists who it had been
rumoured were coming to Newport
I remained at Mr [L.]Edwards' House
until half past seven on the following
Monday Morning - I then left Mr
Edwards' and proceeded home to Mr Williams'
I informed him that the Chartists were
expected in Newport and that all the
Shops were to be closed - I left Mr Williams
and informed my Father in order to his
being prepared for the Chartists - I
went from my father's house towards
Mr Lewis Edwards' again - I got so
far as Stow Turnpike - - a little the other
side of it when I heard shouting in the
direction of Tredegar Park - I returned
back through the Turnpike and went
so far as the Friars where I remained
a few minutes and listened to hear
the Shouting again - I again heard
the Shouting - I then went into a field
near Mr Morgan's House - I heard
continued Shouting - I went to the
bottom of the Field into the Cardiff
Road - I asked two men who were
standing on a Wall in the road
whether they saw any thing - one of
them said ["] The Chartists are coming

Cardiff Road towards Newport - in the
direction of Commercial Street -on my
way I met John Partridge who has been
committed to Prison- This was as near
as I can recollect about half past eight
Partridge was going towards the Machine
I stopped near Tubbs' on the
Cardiff Road to see the Chartists come
I saw an immense body of men - I ran up the Fields towards the Church I came out nearly at

the top of the Lane leading to the Church- I went then

so far as Llewellin Johns - & there I staid -
I had a conversation with the Revd Mr
Isaacson - I told him ^ I had seen the Chartists
^ and that they would be here in a few minutes -
As soon as the Chartists made their
appearance I jumped over a Wall into
a Garden - I could see over the Wall -
[?] it is about three feet high -
I saw about a thousand men mass -
They were all around - some with Guns -
others had swords, pikes, clubs and
other similar weapons - I saw Richard
Rock [Rorke] of Newport with the men - he
was in the midst of them - he had
a pick-axe on his shoulders held
by his right hand - He nodded
at me as he passed- As soon as the
Chartists had passed I went a little
way down the Hill- Stow hill- I
saw the Chartists running away-
and then returned to Commercial
Street- I went so far as the
