Criccieth David Lloyd George’s Horseshoe
March 1945 - Years ago Myrddin Fardd the Bard of Chwilog which is in the parish of Llanystumdwy, near Criccieth, declared that it was ancient belief that the man who drank from a well into which a horseshoe had found its way would become famous. The legend sprang to the mind of Mr Evan Elias, boyhood friend of the late Earl Lloyd George, when cleaning out the little washing well at the bottom of the garden of Lloyd George’s cottage home some years ago. He found an old horse shoe. Mr Elias said that the well had certainly not been cleaned out within living memory though it was a washing well. Lloyd George, as a thirsty boy, often drank from the well. Mr Elias gave the horseshoe to the Earl’s brother, Alderman William George who has kept it with relics associated with his family. Alluding to the legend he remarked: “Shall we say it is at least a ‘coincidence’?”
