Wales Africa Links / UN Gold Star Communities Award ‘Twinning Roadsign’ presented to the Welsh Highland Railway in 2014, which remains at the Temple of Peace among the public collections and displays.
The Wales Africa Gold Star Awards were started in 2007, recognising the contribution of local community partnerships in building connections, participation and understanding between Welsh and Africa people in the wake of the 2005 Make Poverty History campaign, and their contribution towards the UN's Millennium Development Goals for poverty and environmental improvement. The 'Partnership' Award recognised those links whose work together was demonstrating mutual benefit and applied learning, going far beyond purely charitable aims.
The Welsh Highland Railway, today one of North Wales' premier tourist attractions linking Porthmadog with Caernarfon via Eryri and the Snowdon massif, was reconstructed after nearly 70 years between 1997 and 2011, through collaboration between Welsh volunteers and the South African heritage centre at Sandstone. Today, colourful and massive South African Beyer-Garratt locomotives (which had been working in Eastern SA to the mid-1990s) lead services through Snowdonia on South African rails, reconstructed with the support of South African expertise. WHR and Ffestiniog volunteers and staff have regularly exchanged over the years - an excellent if unusual example of skill sharing between 2 nations working very much to Wales' benefit.
The partnership awards continue today through WCIA's Hub Cymru Africa programme.
