Letter sent home from the First World War by Owen Ashton of Llawryglyn, 13 May 1917 [page 1 of 2]

Description

Owen writes from Zand le Mere, near Withernsea, Yorkshire, having left Bury on Friday morning. He describes going down to Withernsea with the R.C. Roman Catholics. The differences in worshipping practices are obvious as Owen complains that he does not like their way of worshipping and that they are nothing like 'us'. He asks his little sister and mother if they have stopped crying and if they are now laughing like him. He describes the journey to Bury, thanks them for the small parcel and mentions that he called into a Tavern where he and his travelling companion had a bottle of beer. He was very thirsty and had had nothing to drink since leaving Llanidloes He ends his letter by commenting that, so far, he hasn't seen anywhere to compare with his own valley, Llawryglyn.
