Description

Drawing by Falcon Hildred: Rhiwbryfdir from Holland's Level, Blaenau Ffestiniog, 1997.
Pencil, ink and watercolour on paper.
This composite of views of Glanypwll Road in Rhiwbryfdir, Blaenau Ffestiniog, includes elevated perspectives from the nearby Holland's Level slate tip. It shows how the houses, shops and chapels nestle comfortably together despite their haphazard development, and how the frontages belie the intensive exploitation of rear plots for further buildings. The drawing centres on Rhiw Calvanistic Methodist chapel: first built in 1856, the chapel was indeed central to community life.
