Description
Drawing by Falcon Hildred.
Bethania Welsh Independent chapel, Manod Road, Blaenau Ffestiniog, 2001
From the austere and simple interiors of the early chapels developed what the Wesleyan Methodists called 'The Age of Mahogany'. Though most of the wood used was pitch pine, clever use of comb-staining and varnishing created rich interiors. Members of industrial congregations often contributed their own skills in carpentry, metal working and masonry and these sketches show the wealth of thought and detail that was put into show pieces and practical objects alike.
