Description

Drawing by Falcon Hildred
Stefan haymaking, Pen-y-Bryn, Blaenau Ffestiniog, 1993
Pencil, ink and watercolour on paper
Falcon drew this scene of haymaking at his neighbour's farm from his sitting room window using binoculars on the morning of 18 August 1993. Stefan, the farmer, had been a German prisoner of war in the area and decided to stay on when peace came. He always did his haymaking by the traditional method of clearing the edge with a scythe and then bringing the tractor in with family and friends to cut the middle. It turned out to be the last time he cut the meadow this way.

I lived nearby as a child, from 1960 to 1968. Local children used to help with the hay making. Good memories. Still strikes me as positive that we all knew he had been a pow and memories of the war were still strong for our parents and grandparents, but I was not aware of any animosity.
