Description
Drawing by Falcon Hildred
Holland's Level - aerial view of house by cutting, chimney and incline, 2001
Pencil, ink and watercolour on paper.
Here the artist records some of the features of Holland's Level slate quarry as he saw them in 1968 - a cottage, part of the slate mill and a tramway cutting - as seen from normal eye level. But then he adopts a bird's eye view so as to emphasise the relationships between the features. Quarrying here began in 1827 and the steam-powered slate mill was built in about 1860. All is now derelict, the chimney has gone and the features are under threat from tipping and the ravages of the weather.
