Description
A photograph of the library, showing two columns supporting the beamed ceiling.
Broughton Hall is a timber framed country house built in the early 17th century. Many alterations were carried out during the 1800's. The building was demolished in 1959. The West Front Porch: Added on the building in 1852, appears to be mainly made of wood, in keeping the house frontage. A Fanlight window lies above the large doorway. A number of flowers possibly Roses, are carved across the top. The focal point at the very top is an heraldic crest. Interior: West Entrance Hall, a beamed ceiling, sash windows and wooden flooring. The focal point of the room is the large fireplace upon which is inscribed, "When friends meet hearts warm". Library: Two columns support the beamed ceiling. All along the walls are wooden bookcases. The fireplace has a simple wooden surround. At its' foot stands a deep stone hearth. Over the fire is a wooden area which incorporates the fireplace into the bookshelves. Staircase: The staircase which is contemporary with the house has a wooden banister with a running vine-scroll as well as an heraldic beast. South West Drawing Room: the floor is wooden and the ceiling is patterned plaster. The walls are wood panelled and at the top they are carved. The fireplace is the focal point, the mantle sides are engaged columns. The inner part of the fireplace is marble. The South East Drawing Room: decorated in the same manor as the south west drawing room. The ceiling is patterned plaster and the floor is wooden, the fireplace is also the same with the mantle being supported by engaged columns. Dining Room: Has moulded beams on the ceiling and wooden floor. A plain doorway lies to the north. The west side of the room is where the fireplace is situated. The surround is wooden but plain.
