Description
95/94 - Serpentinite is a rock formed by the alteration of some igneous rocks. These contain minerals containing iron and magnesium. When these react with water they alter to serpentine minerals which have a soft greasy feel. Serpentine from Holy Island was extracted in the early 19th Century as an ornamental stone. The best example is a table made for Napoleon when he was in exile on St Helena.
