The Chartists
Collection of items relating to the Chartists, including learning resources. Mainly digitised as part of the following project. Cynefin — Chartism: The Unlocking the Chartist Trials Project has brought to life the words of the ordinary men and women caught up in the fight for democracy in the South Wales valleys at the beginning of Queen Victoria's reign. The Chartists were a nineteenth century working class movement who campaigned for better working and political rights and conditions for working men. They based their campaign around a six points Charter. The People’s Charter, as it became known, was launched by William Lovett on behalf of the London Working Men’s Association in May 1838. Transcription is ongoing of more than 3,000 documents that were gathered together shortly after the Chartist uprising that took place in Newport on 3rd and 4th November 1839. Some of the documents were used in the sensational treason trial that took place in Monmouth's Shire Hall the following month. The project also brought together a number of organisations with learning material relating to Chartism. We are adding these resources to People’s Collection Wales for use by schools and community groups.
