Letter written to Thomas Benbow Phillips by his mother, Mrs Suzannah Phillips at Pelotas, dated 21 December 1875

Mrs Phillips tells her son she would very much like to see him, but was very weak and not able to travel. She had suffered from diarrohea for the third time, then a stoppage of water. Dr Gama and Dr Campello had been to see her and ordered a hot bath for three nights running to no avail, but God had made her better. She missed her late husband very much, and went on to say that his had been the largest funeral at Pelotas. Seventy two carriages went from the house to the church, and a hundred from the church to the burial ground. Mr Moseley had told her Thomas Benbow Phillips had been ill, and she hoped he was better. Mr Moseley had lost a child who had been ill a long time and the medicine had been very expensive. Mrs Moseley was expecting another child in a month. Mrs Phillips had been to lunch the previous day with Mrs Massa, the family were inquiring about Thomas Benbow Phillips, and a middle aged gentleman who had just returned from Rio Grande was there, and reported that Thomas Benbow Phillips was very well. Suzannah would be eleven years old the following Saturday. Mrs Phillips sent her good wishes.
