Description
Morfudd Owen (1881-1918) was born at Treforest, near Pontypridd. She was an accomplished pianist and was awarded a 'Caradog' scholarship to study music at Cardiff University where she graduated in 1912. She became a member of the Gorsedd of the Bards at the Wrexham National Eisteddfod the same year, under her bardic name 'Morfudd Llwyn-Owen'. She went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she was awarded a number of prestigous prizes for her composition work and singing. In 1914 she co-edited a volume of folk tunes from Flintshire and the Vale of Clwyd which had been collected by her friend Lady Ruth Herbert Lewis. She composed a large number of orchestral pieces and songs; one of her best-known works is the song 'Gweddi y Pechadur'. In 1917 she married the psychoanalyst Ernest Jones (1879-1958), but died tragically on 7 September 1918 from appendicitis, at the age of 27.
