Description

Major Probert of the Royal Monmouthshire Regiment discovered this device near an abandoned German 77mm gun during the First World War. The dial sight allowed large artillery guns to be aimed at targets out of direct sight. This meant that guns could be placed out of sight of the enemy, perhaps behind a crest, and therefore be much more difficult for the enemy to pinpoint and attack. They could also attack enemy targets that were concealed.
