A Whitchurch (Cardiff) man, born and raised, 1952, with Llandaff Yard/Llandaff North ancestry. Attended Eglwys Wen Junior School and Whitchurch Grammar School (1964 - 69).
Pursued a career in mechanical engineering completing an apprenticeship in 1973 then on to University College Cardiff in 1975, obtaining a B.Sc., (Hons) Mechanical Engineering in 1978.
Became a Chartered Engineer and Member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers in 1988 following a career mainly in machinery design and project engineering in the pulp, paper and board making industry and the steel and aluminium industry. Retired in 2011 after working for a short period as a lecturer at Gwent College (Nash campus) and the last 9 years with the Welsh Government on business development.
Held a fascination for local history from a young age having lived close to the Melin Gruffydd works, TVR and the Glamorganshire Canal, all of which once employed his grandparents. Has been inspired by the books of Edgar Chappell.
